HIV conspiracy thriller sometimes slips into camp

by Kaizaad Kotwal

Conspiracy theories abound, particularly in an age saturated with manic media coverage of everything while big business and politicians make sordid deals to line their pockets and screw the powerless. No matter what the most rational individual tells you, we have all found at least one conspiracy theory seductive, alluring and totally plausible. Plus, history has shown us that some of them are true.

A new release from Wolfe Video, a distributor of LGBT home videos, creates a

thriller by setting a conspiracy theory against one of the most compelling issues of our times.

No One Sleeps tackles the idea that HIV was engineered by humans as part of a global rush to supremacy in germ warfare. This bioweapon was then introduced to unwitting individuals who became guinea pigs in a grotesque abuse of government and corporate power.

The film focuses on the quest by Stephan Hein, a German who arrives in San Francisco on a quest to prove that the AIDS virus was deliberately created.

Stephan has a mission given to him by his father on his deathbed. Dad, a medical researcher, identified some of the experimenters and survivors involved.

Armed with this evidence. Stephan attempts to track down these individuals. However, he discovers that, one by one. someone is killing off the people who hold the key to this bizarre scheme.

Stephan's journey takes him from seedy leather bars to the San Francisco Opera House. Along the way he becomes involved with the detectives investigating the murders, and falls in love with a waiter. The waiter is a man of mystery and seems to be hiding many secrets, particularly evident in his volatile outbursts,

Trying to uncover the truth. Stephan is forced to also face truth about himself, his need for love, and his desire

for harmony within himself and in the world around him.

Research Can Be Murder...

The film works well for the most part, but sometimes the concent of the conspiracy theory slips into camp. However, the ending redeems any campiness, leaving the conspiracy theory as open-ended as it was at the start. R2gardless, the film is a fun ride, with a few twists and a lot of erotic playfulness along the way.

The murderer's identity comes not so much a surprise but as a sad commentary on the state of affairs in the IGBT world. particularly as it connects to HIV and AIDS. The film raises some interesting points to think about when it comes to the ways in which gay men become targets of the more powerful in society.

No One Sleeps

Tom Wlaschiha as Stephan is believable most of the way, and he has a tough job making the conspiracy theory seem real while keeping a straight face

Jim Thalman is enigmatic to watch as the volatile waiter who falls in love with Stephan. Irit levias a sympathetic police investigator is fun, albeit a bit campy at times.

No One Sleeps is a unique story executed effectively, for the most part. While the film doesn't come to any conclusions about the conspiracy theory, rest assured there are many people out there still trying to prove that the AIDS epidemic is the direct result of human experimentation run amok.
